Dr. Don Colbert warns readers of the dangers of artificial sweeteners on brain function in new book, ‘Dr. Colbert’s Healthy Brain Zone’

‘Avoid the dementogen of sweeteners, and lower your intake of sugary foods and beverages, and you will be well on your way to lowering your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia,’ bestselling author declares

DALLAS — The average American eats (or drinks) more than 100 pounds of sugar each year. As America’s consumption of sugar rises each year, many switch to sugar substitutes as a “quick fix” to avoid sugar. In 2020 alone, more than 141 million Americans reported to switching to sugar substitutes. While sugar and sugary alternatives are known to have a negative impact on health, many don’t know the true impact of sugar and sugar substitutes on the brain.

Bestselling author Dr. Don Colbert recently released his latest book, “Dr. Colbert’s Healthy Brain Zone,” to concisely identify the key steps needed to break the cycle of memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. When it comes to artificial sweeteners, Colbert knows the dangers of sugar substitutes well.

“Of the many artificial sweeteners out there, aspartame is one of the most common,” said Colbert. “How common? Aspartame is an ingredient in thousands of different processed foods! You name it, and it probably has aspartame in it.

“Aspartame has been shown to cause anxiety, cognitive impairment, depression, headaches, irritable moods, learning impairment, memory issues, migraines, and sleep impairment. Cognitive symptoms you certainly don’t want, such as ‘deficits in complex attention, inefficient information processing, reduced executive functioning, slower processing speed, and long-tern memory loss’ are all a result of consuming aspartame. Aspartame is poisonous to the brain, but its negative impact is multiplied when consumed with carbohydrates.”

For those who think that sticking to traditional sugar is better than the man-made alternatives, Colbert has a separate warning. “You may be wondering if sugar itself is a dementogen,” he commented. “You could certainly say it is for all the damage that sugar does to the body. I do call sugar a dementogen. Some even call it poison. But in comparing artificially sweetened beverages to sugar-sweetened ones, the artificial ones are far worse.

“For years, we have been sold the idea that ‘sugar-free’ is a good thing. When artificial sweeteners are used, rest assured that they more than eclipse any health benefits from the lack of sugar. What’s more, the Alzheimer’s and dementia epidemics are following right behind the diabetes epidemic, which is following the obesity epidemic. The excessive intake of sugars (in any form) ages and inflames our bodies and brains, and over time amyloid plague in the brain cannot help but build up.

“Avoid the dementogen of sweeteners, and lower your intake of sugary foods and beverages, and you will be well on your way to lowering your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

In the book, Dr. Colbert looks inside the science and provides natural protocols and treatments for cognitive decline, including:

  • A weekly plan that incorporates supplements and healthy eating for optimum results
  • Thirty easy-to-make recipes for restoring balance and maximizing brain function
  • Instructions for other simple protocols that help maintain a healthy brain
