Praying Like Jesus: Don't Cease Connection to the Creator

Praying Like Jesus: Don't Cease Connection to the Creator

Authentic Communion with God

In John 11, Jesus made a simple but profound statement. He was just about to raise Lazarus from the dead, and a crowd had gathered around Him. After He told them to move the stone from Lazarus’ tomb, He lifted His eyes to heaven and said: “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”

Now, bear in mind that He hadn’t said anything yet. There was no preceding prayer. It wasn’t as if Jesus had been speaking out loud in prayer before He made this statement. Yeshua said, “I knew that You always hear Me,” because He always had an internal dialogue going on with the Spirit in His soul. He walked continually in a silent, internal discourse with the Father. The words and emotions that Yeshua shared with the Father were not always expressed out loud. He lived in a secret place. He lived out of an inward knowing, and He lived from the inside out. When Jesus said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me,” He was saying, “Father, I’m speaking to You now with My audible voice so everybody around Me will understand our relationship.”

We are striving for a continual internal communication with the Spirit of God. The Scriptures say, “Pray without ceasing.” Prayer doesn’t have to be out loud. We’re praying when we’re reaching out to God, even if it’s simply from our hearts or minds.
The Hebrew word kavanah means direction or intention. It is often used in relation to focus and concentration in prayer. When we’re directing our focus toward the Lord, when we’re desiring Him, that’s prayer because prayer is simply reaching out to God. When we’re setting our attention on Father God and reaching out to Him in our hearts, we’re praying, whether or not an audible word escapes our lips. Beloved one, God hears the most subtle movement of your soul. You don’t have to raise your voice and project loudly or use eloquent words for God to hear you. He already hears you.

You don’t have to go out “there” somewhere to connect with Him. God is in the center of your heart right now, and He wants you to know He already hears you, whether or not you make a sound.
It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?” But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.—Deuteronomy 30:12–14

Paul proclaimed this same principle of the kingdom: “But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down), or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).’ But what does it say? ‘The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart’—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching.” God the Father longs for us to know that He hears the faintest whisper of our being. Trust Him.
