How to Break the Shackles of Spiritual Slavery

How to Break the Shackles of Spiritual Slavery

The following passage is one of my favorites. Why? Because it reminds us to stop over-blaming the devil and start taking personal responsibility for our actions. Now, you may have expected me to oversaturate you with a brand-new revelation of demons and their names or some new demonic force being released on the earth. While there is a place for that, it is more important that we learn how to close any openings the enemy might want to take advantage of. We do this by obeying what God tells us in His Word. Let’s take a look:

By His divine power, God has given us everything we need to live a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the one who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

—2 Peter 1:3–4, NLT

Right here it tells us, clear as day, that heaven has given us everything we need. This removes the need for some special revelation or impartation. The atoning sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is more than enough.

Heaven gave us everything we need to live a victorious life over the world, the flesh, and the devil—and especially demons. Demons don’t want us to live godly lives. They specialize in tarnishing our lives when we open doors to let them in. And then they work hard to make sure we lose our deliverance. It is possible to maintain our freedom when we become aware that by placing our faith in Christ, we experience an exchange. Breaking free from the devil’s grasp is impossible without it. The promise given to us in the exchange is this: we are now partakers of Christ’s divine nature. This means that our spirits are born again and regenerated through the power of the Holy Spirit, which causes us to be distinct from the world system. The Bible says that “as he is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17); our precious Lord lived above the cares of this world, and in the wilderness of temptation He was able to overcome the devil. That means we can overcome too. We don’t have to be slaves of this world’s system.

Our spirits have been re-created by the Spirit of God, and God dwells inside us. The “furniture” in our “house” has been changed. The lustful desires we used to have no longer are there. Therefore, the kingdom of darkness has no right in our lives—unless we give the enemy and his minions permission to enter. If those who have gone through deliverance truly want to stay free, they can—because God’s very Spirit lives inside them.
